Jinling Gold Leaf is a traditional Chinese craft that enjoys a long history. It dates back to the Southern Dynasties and has been extensively produced since the Yuan Dynasty. It is a very demanding product to manufacture because of its unique production process. It is still made by hand. Gold leaf is made by hammering gold into thin slice of less than 0.1 μm. It has been used in architectural decoration and on Buddhist statues and even in rare Chinese patent medicines. Gold leaf products are available in Longtan Town in eastern Nanjing and in Huayuan Township in Jiangning District.
Nanjing has a long history of kite flying. It is very interesting to fly a kite in spring. Around Tomb-Sweeping Day, various kinds of kites are flown high at the Rain Flower Terrace outside the South Gate. It is really enjoyable. Kites made in Nanjing are rich in color and variety, often in the shape of birds, insects and fish. There are also a pair of silver swallows, a row of red wild geese, butterfly, a peacock in his pride, Goddess Chang E flying to the moon and heavenly maids scattering blossoms. Moreover, some kites are installed with a paper drum or reed, producing sounds in the air. Many poems describe such a pleasure.
