Called Jubao (Treasure) Gate in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, Zhonghua Gate, shaped like an urn (called Weng in Chinese), is also known as Wengcheng.
It was the south gate of the capital city of the Ming Dynasty, the largest among the city gates in Nanjing. There are 27 caves capable of hiding over 3,000 soldiers and 10,000 piculs of grains. After 600 years of vicissitudes, it still stands erect, simple and unsophisticated. This magnificent ancient military structure is a great attraction to both domestic and foreign tourists.
