Muyan Binjiang Scenic Area

The Muyan Binjiang Scenic Area got its  name due to the Mufu Mountains and Yanziji  Park. Located to the north of the downtown of  Nanjing and between the Nanjing Yangtze River  Bridge and 2nd Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge,  the scenic area extends 10 km westward, flanked  by the surging Yangtze River and the undulating Mufu Mountains.

The mountains boast a large  number of historic and cultural sites and rich  forest resources as well as limestone caves. It constitutes an important part of the scenic area and is  also one of the typical areas highlighting the landscape and harmony between man and nature.

Grand Bao’en Temple Heritage Park

Located outside the Zhonghua Gate, the  Grand Bao’en Temple Heritage Park is adjacent  to the outer Qinhuai River in the north and the  Rain Flower Terrace in the south, borders on the  “1865 Park” in the east and reaches the Yuhua  Road in the west. The park is one of the areas  with the most concentrated historical and cultural resources in Nanjing.

The Grand Bao’en Temple was originally  built over 1,700 years ago, known as the first temple in south China. Then, Buddhism began to  prevail in south China. As the second Buddhist  temple on Chinese land, it was the Buddhist center in ancient and modern China. In the Ming  Dynasty (1368-1644), navigator Zheng He presided over the construction of the Grand Bao’en  Temple. About 100,000 workers were enlisted for  the construction, lasting for 17 years. Emperor  Yongle granted the name “Grand Bao’en Temple”  and the title “Number One Pagoda”. In the subsequent four hundred years, the glass pagoda of the  temple was the most distinctive landmark building in Nanjing, hailed by Western Sinologists as  one of the “world’s seven wonders in the middle  ancient times” comparable to the Colosseum in  Rome. It was imitated by western countries as a  Chinese architectural model.

Niushou Mountain Cultural Tourism Zone

Niushou Mountain gets its name due to its  east and west peaks looking like ox horns. Also  known as Tianque Mountain, it is one of the  four major scenic spots of Jinling.

The beautiful scenery of Niushou Mountain  in spring has been widely known, in particular  the “smoke mist” that drapes the mountain,  flowers and Buddhist architecture. The mountain even bore witness to half of the history of  Nanjing. It is the location for the battle against  Jin Wuzhu led by Yuefei, the cliff with inscriptions, Zheng He Culture Park and two mausoleums of Southern Tang State.

Jinling Sutra Printing House

The Jinling Sutra Printing House was first  established by Mr. Yang Renshan, a renowned  scholar of the late Qing Dynasty, in the fifth year of  Tongzhi era (1862-1874) of the Qing Dynasty. Mr.  Yang was enthusiastic about the collection of Buddhist books of various kinds.

He retrieved from  Japan, Korea and other countries about 300 kinds  of Buddhist writings of the Sui (581-618) and Tang  (618-907) dynasties which had been missing in  China, such as the Zhongguanlun Shu (Commentary on the Madhyamika Shastra) and Bailun Shu (Commentary on the Shata Shastra). He had them  block-printed and distributed. As a result, the doctrines of such Buddhist sects as the Three-Treatise  School, Ci’en (Vijnanavada) Sect and Huayan  Sect were revitalized and studied. With Yang’s  careful planning, the Jinling Sutra Printing House  block-printed the Dazang Jiyao, containing 3,300  volumes of Buddhist classics in 465 categories, and  printed over 100,000 Buddha portraits.
