Ming Dynasty City Walls

The Ming Dynasty City Walls were built  around the ancient city of Nanjing during the  reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty.  This happened more than 600 years ago. The  construction of Ming Dynasty City Walls commenced in 1366 and was completed in 1386.

The  shape of the Ming Dynasty City Walls is not limited to the ancient square. The walls were built  for military needs and they made full use of the  city’s unique terrain including hills and rivers.  The walls surround the Nanjing landscape. In  the Ming Dynasty, the walls had a total length  of 35.267 km and a height of 14-21 meters. The  wall has 13 gates. There was also the outer city  which had a circumference of nearly 60 km.  Recommended attractions of the Ming Dynasty  city walls include Taicheng City, Zhonghua Gate,  Yuejiang Tower, and East Shuiguan.

Nanjing History Museum of the Ming City Wall (Taicheng City)

Located at Jiefang Gate, the Nanjing History  Museum of the Ming City Wall shows and studies  the history and multiple values of the city walls in  Nanjing. It is also the only specialized museum  themed on the ancient city walls in China.

It has indoor and outdoor exhibitions, including the basic ones —City Wall in Nanjing,  Grand Brick Inscriptions and Nanjing City Gate  at the Shence Gate. The exhibition section is  about four kilometers. There are indoor photos,  material objects, models and basic multimedia  exhibits as well as the outdoor wall displaying  the values of the city walls in Nanjing in terms  of history, military aspect, culture, technology  and status protection. They also show the unique  charm of Nanjing.

Gate of Peace (Former Shence Gate)

Shence Gate was the gate of the inner city  of Nanjing in the Ming Dynasty. A folk doggerel  reads like this, “There are thirteen inner gates  and eighteen outer gates, one of which has its  bolt inserted outwards.”The special one refers to  Shence Gate. This small-scale gate is inside and  the Wengcheng outside. The gate of Wengcheng  is at its northeast corner, not opposite to Shence  Gate which thus is called the outer gate of  Wengcheng.

At present, Shence Gate is relatively  complete among the city gates in Nanjing. The  Wengcheng, arched gate and three-bay gate tower with gable and hip roof remain there.  According to the records of the history of the  Ming Dynasty, the survey and design work for  construction of Shence Gate was personally done  by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang’s military prime minister Liu Bowen. There are two doors. At that time,  only one was usually open, and the other would be  opened in case of emergency. It fully reflects Zhu  Yuanzhang’s philosophy of city building: different  methods were taken at different sections and under different environmental conditions.

Stone City

Also known as Dry Face City, Stone City is  about 500 meters west of Qingliang Gate. It was  the west cliff of Qingliang Mountain. Later, to  build the Huju Road, the ridge of the mountain  was cut off, so the cliff was separated from the  mountain. In ancient times, Qingliang Mountain  was adjacent to the Yangtze River in the west.

the  river water and rain, its surface became uneven  and looked like a mask, dubbed “dry face”. In early  Ming Dynasty, the city wall of Nanjing extended  here. Since the steep “dry face” cliff was a natural  barrier, the city wall was integrated with the cliff.  At present, Stone City is open as a park, becoming  one of the symbols of old Nanjing.
