The Nanjing Municipal Museum sits in the former Chaotian Palace ("Palace of Heaven Veneration"), which was built as an imperial palace in the Ming dynasty. Occupying an area of 70,000 square meters, it is the largest preserved traditional Chinese architectural complex south of the Yangtze River.
The museum has a collection of over 100,000 cultural relics from various dynasties, including pre-historic human skull fossils.
