A historical place, the Presidential Palace housed the Office of the President of the Republic of China from 1927 to 1949 when the capital of China was in Nanjing. During this era, the Palace was the center of power, witnessing many important events and decisions made in modern Chinese history. The history of the Palace did not actually start in 1927. Previously it served as the office for executives of Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. On January 1, 1912, Sun Yat-Sen took the oath of office for President of Republic of China in the palace. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Presidential Palace was turned into The Museum of Modern Chinese History.
Visitors can walk the same corridors of power that were trodden by Chinese political luminaries such as Sun Yat-Sen and Chiang Kai Shek, and look into their staff headquarters and offices where they held fort all those years ago. Meanwhile, visitors will have a rare opportunity to view valuable historical materials and relics that were accumulated over 160 years.
