The Ming Dynasty City Walls were built around the ancient city of Nanjing during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty. This happened more than 600 years ago. The construction of Ming Dynasty City Walls commenced in 1366 and was completed in 1386.
The shape of the Ming Dynasty City Walls is not limited to the ancient square. The walls were built for military needs and they made full use of the city’s unique terrain including hills and rivers. The walls surround the Nanjing landscape. In the Ming Dynasty, the walls had a total length of 35.267 km and a height of 14-21 meters. The wall has 13 gates. There was also the outer city which had a circumference of nearly 60 km.
