The Tomb of the King of Borneo Manarejiana is located at Turtle Mountain in Xianghua  Village outside the Ande Gate in Nanjing. The  ancient Kingdom of Borneo was situated in  present-day Brunei in the north of Kalimantan  Island. It had maintained friendly exchanges  with China since the Northern Song Dynasty  (960-1127).

Emperor Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming  Dynasty frequently sent envoys to Borneo. In  1405 or the third year of Yongle era (1403-1424)  of the Ming Dynasty, King Manarejiana dispatched an envoy to present tribute to the Ming  court. Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty  sent an official to Borneo to declare the King of  Borneo was made a vassal of the Ming Dynasty.  In the sixth year of Yongle era, the king led a party of over 150 persons including his wife, younger brothers and sisters, children and ministers  to make a friendly visit to China. In October  the same year, he died of illness at age 28. In his  testament, he showed a desire to “be buried in  China”. Emperor Chengzu had his body buried  according to the traditional burial customs of a  Chinese vassal and conferred the posthumous  title of “Deferent” on him. A memorial hall was  also built for him.
