The largest mosque in Nanjing, Jingjue Mosque stands near Sanshan Street, south of Nanjing. It is the most famous mosque in China’s South-East coastal area, and is listed as one of the eight famous ancient mosques of China.
Jingjue Mosque was first built in the 21st year (1388) during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, on the orders of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. In the 5th Xuande year (1430), Jingjue Mosque was destroyed by fire, and Zheng He requested Emperor Xuande to rebuild it. Its reconstruction was extensive and elaborate, and today this is one of the best preserved ancient mosques related to Zhenghe.
