Located at Zhanyuan Road north of Laiyan Bridge, Zhanyuan Garden is an important heritage site under state protection. With a history of over 600 years, it is also the only well preserved and open kingly mansion of the Ming Dynasty in Nanjing.
It was granted by Zhu Yuanzhang, Emperor Taizu of Ming, to Xu Da, the most meritorious minister in the founding of the Ming Dynasty with the noble title of King of Zhongshan. Known as the “Number One Garden in Jinling”, it was also the temporary dwelling palace of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty during his southern inspection tours. The name “Zhan Yuan” was given and inscribed by Emperor Qianlong. The Xuanwu Lake is located northeast of Nanjing at the foot of the Zhongshan Mountain. It covers an area of 472 hectares, including a water area of 368 hectares. In ancient times, it was called “Sangbo”. In the Six Dynasties, it was a place for troop training, hunting or amusement.
In the early Ming Dynasty, the “yellow-book library” was built and was listed as a forbidden area. Later, it was renamed “Wuzhou Park”; in 1935, it was renamed “Xuanwu Lake Park”. It is the oldest and largest park in Nanjing.
